26_The contentment conundrum: Navigating expectations in a world of ”shoulds”
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
Thursday Sep 14, 2023
We’re back!! The fall semester is in full swing, and Create Space is back after a beautiful summer spending time at home with my kids. In today’s episode we’re going to make sense of the complex world of contentment. Join me as we explore the power of cognitive behavioral therapy, the concept of morally neutral behaviors, and the intriguing vertical and horizontal morality structures that influence our decision-making processes.
We’ll start with a discussion on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a therapeutic approach that empowers people to identify and challenge negative thought patterns. We’ve talked about CBT on the show a few times before and we’ll definitely talk even more about it in later episodes. When it comes to storytelling, the stories we tell ourselves can simply not be understated.
Next, I’m going to introduce you to the concept of morally neutral behaviors. This is something I learned from author, KC Davis. We’ll talk about the idea that not all actions are inherently good or bad. Understanding this concept can set you free from guilt and judgment, allowing you to make choices that feel right to you.
Finally, we’ll turn to the intriguing concept of vertical and horizontal morality structures. We’ll discuss how vertical morality, often rooted in religious or traditional values, can clash with horizontal morality, which considers individual autonomy and societal progress.
This is an episode that’s been on my mind for quite a while now and I’m excited to share it with you! Whether you’re feeling buried under a mountain of unattainable expectations or just wishing you could discover a deeper understanding of your own value system, this episode is for you.

One of the biggest privileges of hosting this podcast is getting to interview current and former students of the Elliott School of Communication. This is a place that changed me for the better and grew me into the person that I am today and to get to honor that same experience in others is something for which I will be forever grateful.
Today, I sat down with local videographer and content creator, Chase Dempsey. I met Chase several years ago as he was completing his undergraduate degree through the Elliott School and he went on to also complete his Master’s in Communication with us as well. Now, he works as a content creator for Bethel College and also runs his own videography company, Chase Me if You Can Productions.
Chase creates magic for his clients every single day with his camera and I can’t wait to share his story with you!
Want to work with Chase? (Believe me, you do.) Check him out on his website, Facebook or Instagram.

24_Sapiens by Yuval Noah Herari: A Book Discussion (Part One)
Sunday Jul 02, 2023
Sunday Jul 02, 2023
In the pilot episode of this podcast, I told you that Create Space is a place where every story is told with radical empathy and compassion. Today, we’re talking about the story of humans and how we came to be.
This episode is a discussion and review of the book, Sapiens: A brief history of humankind, by Yuval Noah Herari. Herari is an Israeli philosopher and much of his body of work is related to storytelling and the impact that story has had on humankind.
This particular book tells the story of human evolution from a biological and scientific viewpoint. It discusses what makes modern humans different from other animal species, why we have been the exclusive apex predator on earth for 10,000 years and what storytelling has to do with it.
This episode is only part 1 as this book is long and detailed. Therefore, in order to give it the time it deserved, I had to break it into two parts. As you prepare to listen, I’d encourage you come in with an open mind that is ready and willing to ponder, wonder, contextualize, and imagine ideas that you may have never considered.
Also, remember that this book and my subsequent discussion of it, is all viewed through the contextual lens of the author’s own cognition and experience, as well as my own. None of this is 100% fact or 100% fiction… which is the beauty of storytelling. It’s all about perspective.

This is one of my favorite Create Space conversations to date. Executive Director of Heroes Academy, Kyle Ellison, discusses what it means to take control of the narrative and to write your own story. More specifically, he talks about what that means to a child. Heroes Academy is a youth mentoring program that was built to help break down barriers and empower youth to become the heroes of their own story. Kyle has no problem shaking things up, redefining the rules and rewriting the script… and he’s teaching future generations to do the same.

On this week’s episode of Create Space, where we'll be recapping the Broadcast Educators Association Conference and the National Association of Broadcasters Convention. These are two of the largest gatherings of broadcast professionals, educators, and enthusiasts from around the world.
NAB and BEA were held in beautiful Las Vegas and this was my first year attending either one. I’d like to give a huge thanks for my department, The Elliott School of Communication, for funding the experience.
In this episode, we'll be discussing the biggest takeaways from NAB and BEA including educational sessions, industry trends, new technologies and keynote speakers.
Join me as I provide an insider's look into NAB and BEA, and let’s discuss together what all of this means for the future of the broadcast industry.
